#179 KIMBERLY KEEN INTERVIEW: MISS ALASKA EARTH USA

Kimberly Keen is a 27-year-old family law lawyer, freelance journalist, model, humanitarian, and environmental activist. She values having a strong work ethic and sense of self in everything she does.

During her childhood, Kimberly developed her love of nature and the outdoors. Her father, an avid hunter and wildlife conservationist, would often take her and her sister on camping trips in the deserts and mountains of the American North West. Her and her father would also rehabilitate injured birds in their neighborhood. At 11, Kimberly convinced her family to take in a stray cat as their own and has since adopted two more rescue cats.

She is currently an avid hiker and enjoys free diving off her native San Diego beaches.

Kimberly graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and the University of San Diego School of Law with a juris doctorate degree. She passed the California bar exam on her first try. While at UCLA, she won second place in the GenUN Case Competition for her initiative to deliver aid to internally displaced persons in Syria. During law school, Kimberly served on the executive board of the Journal of Climate and Energy Law as a comment editor, highlighting the changing laws and policy around climate change and energy conservation. Upon graduation, she won the Pro Bono Service Recognition award for contributing over 100 hours in free legal work.

Kimberly is actively involved with Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights, where she helped the legal team introduce draft legislation to the Iraqi Parliament to help victims of ISIS. She wrote an article about this human rights crisis, where it was published on ELLE.com.

Kimberly is the founder of Oceana Project, where she raises relief funds for wildlife restoration efforts for the disastrous Huntington Beach oil spill. In November of this year, she partnered with One Digital World and co-hosted the “Walk for Wildlife Run for Refugees 5K.” She was able to raise funds for the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, an organisation at the forefront of oil spill restoration, and for One Digital World, to help with refugee education. Volunteers also collected 20 pounds of trash. This year, she was appointed a Global Ambassador for the organization Clean Trails for her extensive efforts with beach and trail cleanups.
