A lot of contestants are about to film pageant videos.

  • Open call videos.

  • Platform videos.

  • Optional competition videos.

  • “Tell us why you should be selected” videos.

And here’s the thing:

A good pageant video does not need to look like a Hollywood production.

In fact, depending on the purpose, that might actually work against you.

But it also cannot look like you grabbed your phone, hit record, panicked for 60 seconds, and hoped for the best.

There is a middle ground.

That middle ground is where most contestants need to live.

  • You need to sound natural, but not rambling.

  • You need to look polished, but not overproduced.

  • You need to feel authentic, but still intentional.

That’s why the little things matter more than people think.

  1. Read your script out loud before you film it. What looks good on paper may sound stiff, awkward, or impossible to say naturally.

  2. Use natural lighting where possible. A ring light can help, but it rarely beats actual sunlight.

  3. Keep your audio consistent. If every clip sounds like it was recorded on a different planet, people notice.

  4. Stop holding the lapel mic directly under your mouth. You do not need to swallow the microphone for it to work.

  5. Use captions when appropriate. Not decorative, unreadable captions. Simple ones that help people actually understand you.

  6. Frame yourself like you’re having a conversation with someone, not like you’re either trapped in their personal space or hiding across the room.

  7. And if you use music, keep it instrumental, rights-free, and quiet.

The goal is not to show off your editing skills.

The goal is to make it easier for people to connect with you.

Because that’s what a pageant video is really doing.

It is not just showing what you look like on camera.

It is showing whether you can communicate clearly, warmly, and confidently when no one is feeding you the next question.

Watch the full video for the complete breakdown, especially before you film anything important.

And if you’re working on an open call video, platform video, or competition submission and you’re unsure what to do, reply to this email or leave a comment.
