If I asked you about your pageant platform, I’d be willing to bet that you have a whole elevator pitch polished and ready to go. You’ve probably picked out a cool name, got a heart-warming story to tell, and maybe even a few tears prepped to convince me of your earnestness.
Question - do you think I believe you? Do I believe anything you’re saying?
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been around enough pageants specifically, and enough humans generally, to know that it’s a good idea to take most things with a grain of salt. And when it comes to pageant platforms, you might need more than just a grain.
Let me be brutally honest with you. I’ve known some contestants who have point-blank lied about their platform during interview. One contestant in particular claimed she had been instrumental in setting up the local chapter of a well-known movement. Unfortunately for her, someone from that movement was on the judging panel, and suffice to say, he wasted no time in informing the director that this contestant was trying to pull a quick one.
I’m not saying this is a common occurrence. What I am saying is that if you’re someone who takes her platform seriously, there should be significant planning and strategizing involved, not simply a new hashtag or Instagram account.
