Pageant Titleholders: What Would I Look For?

If I was judging a pageant, what would I look for in a titleholder and what is one question I would ask?

What ARE judges actually looking for?

If you’ve ever sat there wondering “What are judges actually looking for?” — you’re not alone. I've sat on judging panels for some of the biggest pageants in the world, and to this day I'm still not exactly sure. In fact, I'm pretty sure some judges have NO idea what they're looking for, although I'm sure they'd never admit it.

Whenever I'm asked to judge however, I take it seriously. Part of that involves researching the system—what are their values, mission, etc? Another part is looking at the contestants' social media.

But I think the biggest part has to be deciding WHAT exactly you are looking for as a judge. And yes, that should mesh well with the pageant system you're judging for, but it never hurts to ask yourself:

"What exactly am I looking for when I judge? What qualities are most important, and what are the nice to haves?"

So if I were judging, here’s what I’d be looking for. And — because my brain likes structure — I’ve boiled it down to three things.

1. Vision

If you’re going to wear the sash, you need to have a reason.

Not just “I love helping people” or “I want to inspire the next generation.” That’s lovely. But vague. What I want to know is: what’s your dream?

Where do you want to take this title — and yourself — over the next year?

Because if you don’t have a vision, you’re just kind of… vibing. And that’s not the kind of energy a Director (or sponsor) wants leading their brand.

So give me your “I have a dream” moment. Even if it’s small. Even if it’s local. Just show me you’ve thought about it.
